Hey all,
So within the next week or so, can you include some comments within this post on some potential research/paper avenues for the 'Tangible'? Ways that it fits into your own discipline, perhaps? This is to assist Saelan, Fran and Anne as they write up the CFP. .
Thanks everyone!!

Hey everyone,
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to think through a Coms spin on our tangible theme. The one that strikes me (and my biases) as the most interesting is that of un-mediated touch. For example in Darin's "Problem of Communication" class we talked about a bias in media history towards perfect communication, without noise/distortion/interruption. I'm thinking mostly of the media historian/philosopher John Durham Peters who writes, "Does love arise from the transcendance of the flesh or from its touch? Should we think of communication as perfect contact or as patience amid the imperfections?"
On that note, I want to offer up as some 'possible directions' in the CFP:
-the privileging of mediation/prosthesis in communication discourse, and
-a communication ethics perspective on face-to-face interaction, or embodied political/cultural alterity
I really struggled with the formulation of these, so I'm very open to suggestions/re-formulation/or flat-out rejection for that matter :)
